Condition: Excellent. Nice bright colors and amazing condition with just slightest indication of subtle border wear and a light barely noticable pinhole on each corner as indication of actual theater use in 1959 . This lobby card, from one of director Alfred Hitchcock's best films, captures one of the cinema's finest moments as the biplane attacks a "very out of place" Cary Grant. This scene and the "house" scene from Psycho are the most desirable of all Hitchcock lobbies. This example has a set of staple marks in each corner and a small
This iconic imagery of Cary Grant running away from a charging airplane has become the defining visual for Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece, North by Northwest. This lobby card captures that very moment, and from a rather intense angle. Grant actually thought himself too old to play the character, but Alfred Hitchcock was determined he should be Richard Thornhill, even going so far as to avoid casting James Stewart, who genuinely wanted the part
The biplane scene in North by Northwest is iconic because it epitomizes Alfred Hitchcock's mastery of suspense, visual storytelling, and innovation. By setting the sequence in a vast, open cornfield under broad daylight, Hitchcock subverts expectations, making the ordinary extraordinary and creating an atmosphere of relentless vulnerability. Cary Grant’s desperate attempt to escape the anonymous, lethal biplane symbolizes the film's broader themes of an everyman caught in a web of danger beyond his control. The scene's striking imagery—Grant running for his life against the barren backdrop as the plane closes in—has become one of the most memorable visuals in cinematic history.
NOTE:
This iconic moment has been widely used in cinematic promotion and as a representation of classic Hollywood because it distills the essence of thrilling filmmaking into a single, unforgettable image. It captures the allure of star power, as Grant’s presence exudes both charisma and relatability, while the sequence's timeless tension speaks to Hitchcock's innovative genius. As a visual shorthand for the suspense, drama, and elegance associated with classic Hollywood, it has been endlessly parodied, referenced, and celebrated, ensuring its enduring legacy in film history.
