A most stunning 130+ year old historic photo.  What more needs to be said ?  One of the BEST we've ever seen!

Very rare and original, ca1890 Silver Gelatin Portrait Photograph of Native American Oglala Lakota Sioux Indian Chief Afraid of Hawk taken at the Pine Ridge Agency, South Dakota. This outstanding, period, Larger Format Photograph measures approx. 5” by 7” and is mounted in a period matt (overall size of mount is 5 3/4” by 10”) with the subject’s name inked on the matt. The subject is identified on both the matt and with a period notation on the reverse as "Afraid of a Hawk".   * See enlargeable images above and below 

    Although the photographer is not identified, this beautiful portrait is superbly composed and executed and came to us with nine other Photographs of Oglala Sioux Chiefs and their families of identical format. All of those subjects appear in the 1886 Pine Ridge census roll of 1886 (including Afraid of Hawk) and the 1890 census roll but a number do not appear in any later rolls thus dating the Photos to the period 1886 to 1895.

    The Image is a striking, full length, standing, profile portrait of the proud Oglala Chief wearing a full length, eagle feather headdress, loop style breastplate, bead decorated wool leggings and bead decorated moccasins. In his right hand he holds a pipe with wonderfully decorated stem and catlinite bowl and a stunningly beautiful, massive size bead and quill decorated hide Tobacco Bag.

    This rare and wonderful, Native American Oglala Lakota Sioux Indian Chief, Portrait Photograph is in very good to excellent condition. The Photograph exhibits razor sharp focus, strong contrast and good tonality although the Photo is just a bit uniformly light. The Photo is clean and crisp while the matt has been trimmed and has a chip at the lower right hand corner.
