The "A.A.W." stamp often seen on vintage Coca-Cola flanged signs refers to the Allen & Morrison Sign Co. (sometimes abbreviated as A-M) based in Lynchburg, Virginia. They were a major manufacturer of stamped metal and porcelain flange signs for the company, primarily during the 1940s and 1950s. Design & Die-Cutting: Many of the A.A.W.-marked vintage signs featured iconic die-cut shapes, such as the classic "hobble skirt" glass bottle in the sun or the yellow-dot bottle design.
Capture the unmistakable spirit of classic American advertising with this original mid-20th-century Coca-Cola double-sided flange sign. Featuring Coca-Cola's legendary contour bottle dramatically displayed against a bold yellow circle, this striking piece combines brilliant color, distinctive design, and one of the world's most recognizable trademarks.
Measuring approximately 20.5" high × 24" wide, the sign is constructed of die-cut lithographed tin/steel and was designed as a projecting flange sign. Mounted perpendicular to a storefront wall, its double-sided construction allowed the “Drink Coca-Cola” advertisement to be seen by customers approaching from either direction.
The elaborate die-cut mounting flange adds tremendous visual appeal, with its sweeping architectural design giving the sign an almost Art Deco appearance. Against Coca-Cola's famous red background, the yellow circular field creates a dramatic contrast that immediately draws attention to the classic Coca-Cola bottle.
American Art Works Production
The lower-right portion is marked:
“A.A.W. – 2 – 2”
A.A.W. identifies American Art Works of Coshocton, Ohio, one of the important manufacturers of early Coca-Cola advertising signs. American Art Works produced high-quality lithographed metal advertising for Coca-Cola and numerous other major American brands.
A Classic Piece of Coca-Cola Advertising History
Flange signs were created specifically for commercial display at locations such as general stores, drugstores, grocery markets, service stations, diners, and soda fountains. Unlike conventional flat wall signs, flange signs projected outward from the building, allowing the advertising to attract pedestrians and motorists traveling in either direction.
Because these signs were subjected to years of commercial use and exposure, surviving original examples—particularly those retaining strong graphics and both advertising surfaces—have become increasingly desirable among advanced collectors.
This example exhibits authentic age-related wear, surface marks, oxidation and vintage patina consistent with an original advertising sign of this period. These characteristics contribute to its unmistakable period appearance and historical character.
